Somnapure isn’t a terrible sleep aid. It contains some effective ingredients which have been proven to work in robust scientific studies. However, the main ingredient is Valerian Root, which does not work as advertised. Somnapure has a lot of dead weight which severely reduces the value for money you get from this stack. They could have used that 500mg to include more powerful sleep aids like Tryptophan, Ashwagandha or Magnesium.
Somnapure Natural Sleep Aid Review: What does it claim to do?
Somnapure is a natural sleep aid made and sold by Peak Life. These guys aren’t a big outfit; they only make one other product – a prostate support stack. Somnapure is probably their best-selling supplement. It is certainly the one Peak Life are best known for.
So what does Somnapure claim to do? Who is it supposed to help exactly?
According to the bottle, Somnapure helps users by making them:
- Fall asleep faster
- Stay asleep for longer
- Wake up feeling more refreshed
The bottle also explicitly states that Somnapure is non-habit forming. This is really important to us; the main problem with pharmaceutical, synthetic sleeping pills is that you can easily become dependent on them.
Some people even find them addictive – they start to take them every chance they get. This obviously isn’t great for your long-term mental or physical health.
That’s why we use natural sleep aids instead.

Valerian Root Extract – 500mg
Valerian root extract is a common ingredient in sleep supplements today. It has been used as a natural anxiolytic for centuries in various parts of the world. Supplement manufacturers make all kinds of claims about the benefits of Valerian. The problem is that they never provide any compelling evidence to back up these claims!
We have never seen a convincing clinical study in which valerian supplementation alone improved sleep outcomes for patients. The only studies looking at Valerian have used other substances as well – substances we know to be effective sleep aids!
Lemon Balm Extract – 300mg
Lemon Balm is now a very widely used natural sleep aid. Rightly so; there is some pretty good evidence showing that lemon balm supplementation improves various aspects of sleeping patterns. Interestingly, people with anxiety-related sleep disorders seem to benefit most from lemon balm supplementation. If you lie awake at night worrying about the work or your relationships, then lemon balm might help a lot. The 300mg you get from Somnapure is more than enough to see benefits.
Theanine is an amino acid found in large quantities in black tea. We have known that black tea has a soothing, calming effect on the mind and body for a long time now. However, recent clinical trials have established that theanine is responsible for tea’s relaxing effects.
Theanine works in several different but complimentary ways. It relaxes the muscles, reduces muscular pain, and hastens the onset of sleep. It also works as a mild anxiolytic, helping to reduce any anxiety that might be keeping you up at night. Somnapure provides 200mg, which is plenty.
Hops Extract – 120mg
Hops are a natural sedative. Consuming hops reduces muscle pain, induces physical relaxation, and calms the mind. The reason they have a sedating effect is because of hops’ bitter resin content. Bitter resins increase the expression of GABA, which is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter of the human Central Nervous System. Recent studies have found that the bitter resins in hops cause a significant drop in night-time activity (source).
Now, hops don’t pack a punch like synthetic sedatives do. But they do have a very mild sedating effect when consumed by humans in sufficiently large amounts. They also don’t seem to produce the same kind of groggy after effects as synthetic sedatives, which is great.
Chamomile Extract – 50mg
Chamomile is the classic soothing herbal tea. People around the world brew themselves a cup of chamomile tea whenever they’re feeling stressed. Many people have a cup before bed to promote sleep.
Unfortunately, there is no reason to think that chamomile extract consumption actually promotes sleep in any meaningful way. Studies have failed to find a correlation between chamomile supplementation and better sleeping patterns. We’ve certainly never seen a study in which 50mg per night promoted better sleep. This one is just a bit of a gimmick in our opinion!
Passionflower Extract – 50mg
We keep seeing passionflower in sleep supplements, and we have absolutely no idea why. We have spent hours searching through the available clinical data on passionflower and we are yet to see any evidence that it is an effective sleep aid. There is not one study in which people slept better after consuming passionflower alone. Every study supposedly showing it working used other substances, most of which are well established sleep enhancers!
Somnapure doesn’t contain much passionflower. But the fact that Peak Life have used any in Somnapure is a big disappointment; it tells us they don’t take scientific proof seriously. They’re obviously happy to include ingredients because of hype.
Melatonin – 3mg
Melatonin is a fantastic sleep aid. It is actually one of the most effective, well-proven, and safe natural sleep aids you can possibly use. Melatonin is the hormone which governs your sleeping patterns. The release of melatonin as evening approaches is what causes you to feel drowsy.
Melatonin is remarkable among hormones in that oral supplementation really works! Consuming a few milligrams of melatonin before you want to go to sleep is a fantastic way of quickly inducing sleep. Upping your melatonin levels is a good way to keep you in deep, truly restful stages of sleep for longer.
Our Thoughts On The Somnapure Formula
Somnapure is a middle-of-the-road sleep aid.
It’s not terrible.
But it’s not great either.
Somnapure contains some good ingredients and the dose are pretty generous in places too.
It provides 3mg of melatonin. This is more than the standard 2mg dose we get from most other sleep aids (and a lot more than the 0.5mg we get from Genius Sleep Aid). Taking 3mg of melatonin before you go to bed will help you fall asleep faster and stay in deep, restorative stages of sleep for longer.
But this isn’t enough to get us excited. Melatonin is a standard ingredient in sleep enhancers today. Every stack contains melatonin – even the awful ones.
It’s also just standard, synthetic melatonin. Some sleep aids – like Performance Lab Sleep – utilize more natural sources of melatonin which the body can use more effectively.
Somnapure is also full of useless dead weight.
Passionflower does nothing.
Valerian does nothing.
Chamomile does nothing – you’re best off just having this as a calming tea before bed!
We hate having to pay for useless ingredients, especially so much of them.
Somnapure will help you fall asleep faster than normal, especially if you’re struggling to sleep because of anxiety or a disrupted sleeping schedule.
But Somnapure is not a top quality sleep aid. Not even close. There are far better products available than Somnapure if you want to get optimal sleep and the best possible value for money.
Somnapure Side Effects – Is it safe for long-term use?
We don’t think there are any side effect risks with Somnapure whatsoever.
No serious side effect risks at least.
The ingredients used in Somnapure have all been thoroughly tested in robust clinical trials. None of them have ever been found to cause serious side effects. All of them have been deemed perfectly safe for regular, long-term use.
None of the ingredients in Somnapure are thought to pose long-term health risks.
The only side effects you might have to worry about are those related to digestive issues. Somnapure does contain unusual herbal extracts you will not be used to consuming orally. These might cause some stomach issues – these side effects should be transient and mild.
In conclusion – Should you use Somnapure?
Somnapure is a pretty standard sleep aid.
It’s not terrible, and it can definitely help you get a better night’s sleep. If you’re struggling with jetlag or anxiety-related sleep disorders, then Somnapure can definitely help you.
But there is nothing special about this sleep supplement either.
It contains standard ingredients, in standard forms, at standard doses.
