Summary: Physician’s Choice NatRem is a pretty poor sleep aid by anybody’s standards. The melatonin will help you sleep better. But melatonin alone does not make a great sleeping stack. The other ingredients are either unproven, or they’re dosed too low. There’s no anxiolytic and no magnesium. There are better options!
Physician’s Choice NatRem Review: Product overview
Physician’s Choice are the makers of several general health and wellness supplements. Their current range includes everything from single ingredient herbal extracts to comprehensive probiotics, fat loss supplements, and multivitamins. Physician’s Choice NatRem is a specialized natural sleep aid. But what does it claim to do exactly? How does it work?
According to the official website, Physician’s Choice NatRem has been “clinically proven” to:
- Help you fall asleep faster
- Improve the quality of your sleep
- Reduce anxiety and stress
- Help you awake feeling more refreshed
- Promotes REM sleep
- Increases alpha waves
Physician’s Choice make a big deal out of the fact their ingredients are “award-winning” and “clinically proven”. We’ll be the judges of that!
It’s also interesting to see them say that Physician’s Choice NatRem promotes deep sleep and REM sleep. REM sleep is the lightest stage of sleep; we currently believe that this is the stage of sleep where we do the bulk of our memory encoding, although researchers aren’t certain. It is not the same as deep sleep.
It will be interesting to see what Physician’s Choice NatRem does to promote both REM sleep and deep sleep!
So, does Physician’s Choice NatRem really work? What can it actually do? Is it safe? What kind of side effect risks are we talking about here? You can find answers to these questions in our full Physician’s Choice NatRem review below.
Physician’s Choice NatRem Ingredients
Let’s jump right into it. Here is the Physician’s Choice NatRem formula as it appears on the bottle:
We will now do a quick overview of each ingredient, what it does to enhance sleep, and what we make of the dose used in Physician’s Choice’s sleep aid. If you have any questions, please just post them in the comments section at the end and we’ll get right back to you.
Chamomile Root Powder – 100mg
Chamomile has long been used as a soothing, relaxing tea. It is said to calm the nerves and to promote a deep, restful sleep when drunk before bed. However, there isn’t much clinical evidence to back these claims up. We have never come across a robust clinical trial in which people saw meaningful improvements in sleep quality from using chamomile powder supplements. It seems that this one is best left as a nice, caffeine-free tea! It is not an effective sleep aid.
Valerian Root – 100mg
Valerian root is found in most natural sleep aids. It is said to be a powerful inducer of sleep. People usually cite a couple of studies to back these claims up. However, when you look at said studies you’ll see that valerian is always used alongside multiple other substances, some of which are known sleep aids. Until we see some studies conducted on valerian alone – with good results – we’re going to just assume that this stuff is bogus.
L-Theanine – 50mg
Theanine is a very effective natural sleep enhancer. It improves multiple different aspects of sleep; it helps speed up the onset of sleep, keeps you asleep for longer, and helps prevent the twitching and spasms which can so often wake you up! However, 50mg of theanine is not a large amount – you can get similar quantities from drinking black tea.
Melatonin – 5mg
This is easily the best ingredient in Physician’s Choice NatRem. It is actually the only part of the formula which we think has any chance of enhancing sleep by a meaningful degree! Melatonin is the hormone which governs you sleep-wake cycles. The release of melatonin causes you to feel sleepy. When melatonin levels spike, you are in the deepest stages of sleep. Likewise, when melatonin levels fall, you enter lighter stages of sleep until you finally wake up. The 5mg we get from Physician’s Choice NatRem is more than enough to see good results.
Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate – 2mg
This is the active form of Vitamin B6. It is a coenzyme involved in numerous important reactions in the body. Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate is a much more bioavailable form of B6 than normal B6. It more rapidly enters the bloodstream, and it can be more readily used by your cells. Studies have found that supplementing with Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate lead to feelings of relaxation, reduced inflammation, and better sleep. However, many of these supplements use both magnesium and Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate – magnesium does the same things by itself!
Our thoughts on the Physician’s Choice NatRem formula
We’re not overly impressed with Physician’s Choice NatRem as a sleep aid.
Compared to some of the other sleep aids on the market right now, Physician’s Choice NatRem just doesn’t offer a great deal of value for money. Results are going to be limited when a formula is dependent on just one or two effective ingredients.
All of the benefits you will see from using Physician’s Choice NatRem will no doubt come from the melatonin. Taking 5mg of melatonin shortly before bed will definitely induce sleep, promote a deep, continuous sleep, and leave you feeling far more refreshed the next day.
But apart from that the Physician’s Choice NatRem formula doesn’t do a lot for us.
We do get a small serving of theanine. But we could obtain similar amounts from a few cups of decaffeinated black tea.
The rest of the ingredients lack scientific proof. Both B6 and Valerian have some scientific backing, but in both cases these studies have used other substances as well substances we know to be potent sleep aids.
There’s no magnesium in Physician’s Choice NatRem. There’s no tryptophan, or even some 5-HTP. Theanine is a cheap amino acid and it is still dosed low by modern sleep aid standards.
All-in-all, Physician’s Choice NatRem is a poor sleep aid. There are other supplements on the market right now which have far greater potential for enhancing your sleeping patterns.
You get very little value for money from this sleep aid. Physician’s Choice NatRem will improve the quality of your sleep, but it doesn’t work anywhere near as well as some of the other sleep aids on sale today – supplements which have a similar price tag too!
Side Effects: Is Physician’s Choice NatRem safe?
There’s absolutely nothing in Physician’s Choice NatRem that makes us worried about side effects or long-term health risks.
These ingredients are all natural, they’ve been thoroughly tested in clinical conditions, and they’re all deemed perfectly safe for regular human consumption.
What’s more, none of the ingredients in this sleep aid are habit-forming or addictive. They are used in dozens of sleep aids, and there is no reason to think that they pose safety concerns.
So all things considered, this looks like a safe sleeping supplement to us!
However, everyone is different. You all have your own unique allergies, pre-existing medical conditions, and so on. To be sure that Physician’s Choice NatRem is safe for you, you need to talk to your regular family doctor!
In conclusion – Is Physician’s Choice NatRem a good sleep aid?
In all honesty we don’t believe Physician’s Choice NatRem to be a very good sleep aid at all.
It is not a great choice for anybody, regardless of specific goals. It is not well suited to reducing sleep latency, reducing anxiety, or reducing sleep twitches.
The large dose of melatonin will promote deep sleep, as well as a healthy sleeping cycle if used on a nightly basis.
But this is pretty basic for a sleep aid. A standard dose of melatonin alone does not make a great sleeping supplement!
The theanine is dosed low.
There’s no potent anxiolytic; no Ashwagandha, no 5-HTP, nor any Tryptophan.
There’s no magnesium – another basic ingredient left out of Physician’s Choice NatRem!
If you’re looking for a stack to help you get to sleep faster, to stay asleep for longer, and to improve the quality of your sleep, we recommend using a more advanced, professional-quality supplement than Physician’s Choice NatRem.
